When buying or registering an Apple Developer account, geography matters more than most developers expect. The country in which an account is registered affects everything from App Store availability in specific markets to payment processing, App Store Connect settings, and certain legal capabilities.
At developerios.xyz, we offer accounts in 10+ GEO regions and can fulfill pre-orders without a deposit for specific geographies. This guide explains what GEO means for your account and how to choose the right region for your use case.
๐ Available on request: We work with 10+ GEOs and accept pre-orders without a deposit. If you need a specific country not currently in stock, contact us via Telegram.
What Does GEO Mean for an Apple Developer Account?
The GEO (geographic region) of an Apple Developer account refers to the country or territory where the Apple ID associated with the account was created and verified. This is distinct from where you as the developer are physically located.
Key things determined by account GEO:
- Apple ID country setting โ where the account is "based" in Apple's system
- App Store Connect banking โ which currencies and payment methods are available for paid apps
- Phone number for 2FA โ the country code of the trusted phone number linked to the account
- Legal agreements โ some developer agreements differ by region (e.g., EU Digital Markets Act compliance)
- Account trust signals โ Apple's risk algorithms consider account origin
Does GEO Affect App Store Distribution?
Yes and no โ it's a common misconception that you can only publish to the App Store in the same country as your account. You can publish apps to any App Store market regardless of your account GEO. In App Store Connect, you choose which countries and regions to distribute your app to โ this is independent of account origin.
However, GEO does affect:
- Paid apps and in-app purchases โ to receive payouts, your bank account must match the currency region of your App Store Connect banking profile. You can add banking in multiple regions.
- Tax forms โ Apple requires different tax documentation depending on the account's country.
- Certain app categories โ Financial, gaming (real-money), and health apps may face region-specific restrictions.
Popular GEO Regions and Their Use Cases
๐บ๐ธ United States
The most universally accepted GEO. US accounts are trusted by Apple's systems, have full access to all App Store features including in-app purchases, subscriptions, and Apple Pay. Ideal for apps targeting North American markets or for developers who want the most stable account environment.
๐ฌ๐ง United Kingdom
Strong GEO for European market targeting. Post-Brexit, UK accounts operate under a slightly different regulatory framework. Good option for fintech and subscription apps targeting UK users.
๐ฉ๐ช Germany / ๐ซ๐ท France / ๐ฎ๐น Italy
EU-based accounts are increasingly important with the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) opening alternative distribution channels. If you plan to distribute apps through alternative marketplaces in the EU, an EU account may be required.
๐ต๐ฑ Poland / ๐จ๐ฟ Czech Republic
Popular GEOs for Eastern European dev teams. Lower-friction accounts, widely available, good for most standard app categories.
๐บ๐ฆ Ukraine / ๐ฐ๐ฟ Kazakhstan
Post-Soviet market accounts. Popular among CIS-region development teams. Good availability through developerios.xyz stock.
๐น๐ท Turkey
Turkish accounts are popular due to their relatively low App Store pricing tier, making them useful for price-sensitive markets. Note: currency fluctuations can affect pricing.
๐ง๐ท Brazil / ๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexico
Latin American GEOs for teams targeting LATAM markets. Local payment methods like Pix (Brazil) are only available through App Store Connect with a Brazilian banking profile.
How to Choose the Right GEO
Here's a practical decision framework:
| Your situation | Recommended GEO |
|---|---|
| Publishing a global app, no specific market focus | US or UK |
| Targeting European users, need EU DMA compliance | Germany, France, or another EU country |
| Working with CIS-region clients or teams | Ukraine, Kazakhstan |
| Need a lower-cost App Store pricing tier | Turkey, Brazil |
| Need maximum account trust / stability | US |
| LATAM market focus | Brazil or Mexico |
๐ก Pro tip: For most use cases โ especially if you're just getting started โ a US account is the safest and most flexible choice. You can always publish to any market globally from a US account.
Can I Change the GEO of an Existing Account?
Changing the country/region of an Apple ID is possible, but it comes with restrictions:
- You must have no active subscriptions billed through Apple
- You must have no remaining store credit
- Changes can only be made once every 90 days
- Changing country affects your App Store Connect banking profile and may require re-submitting tax forms
For purchased accounts, we strongly recommend not changing the GEO unless absolutely necessary. Changing account settings can trigger Apple's security review and put the account at risk. If you need a specific GEO, order the right account upfront.
